homosexuality in comics

By @katiedoyle

If you geek girls aren’t familiar with Topless Robot (@ToplessRobot), I highly recommend it.  I check the website every day for geek news and a side of bitter hatred or childlike glee depending on the subject. Last week, Topless Robot posted an article about a homosexual relationship sprouting in a mainstream comic.  The result was an intelligent conversation about the gay characters in said comic. Transformers Movie Review

06 · 26 · 09

by @katiedoyletransformers-movie

People people PEOPLE!

Have you seen this movie? You haven’t?
Well let me tell ya, you’re in for a treat.

You know the kind you get from the dentist after he drills into your teeth? The ones that are worth, like, a penny. The ones that you get bored with after two seconds and then want to smash under a car but they DON’T BREAK BECAUSE THEY ARE FAR TOO RESILIENT! That is what the experience of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was like. It’s all shiny and new but once you get into it…awful. Just awful. I’ve seen a lot of bad movies and bad television and bad everything, but I’ve always felt like I grew from the experience. The only thing growing from this experience is Michael Bay’s bank account and many a geeks fury. I want my three hours back. Read the rest of this entry ?

Dead Future “How I Became a Zombie”

06 · 20 · 09

by @geekgirls

The Grim Crew brings about their own flavor of sequential storytelling, short stories and more. Raised by stories of mythology, fairy tales, and bad horror movies from the 80s, they plan to bring their unique twist to the world.

Their group on Project Fanboy recently held a contest, “How I Became a Zombie”. The contest asked just this question. Participants were asked to write about how they theoretically became a zombie at the start of the Zombiocalypse. My entry won runner up and as a prize, my likeness will be drawn in the upcoming book “Dead Future“!! Read the rest of this entry ?

Evolution of the GEEK – How we became Hip

06 · 08 · 09

by @lauraklotz

As recently as a century ago, the term geek referred to sideshow circus performers whose job it was to entertain the crowd by biting the heads off of live chickens or bats.

We’ve come a long way, baby.

The etymology of the word dates back to the old English or Low German word geck, meaning ‘freak.’  According to the relevant article at Wikipedia, the definition of geek has evolved over time to the point where it no longer has a definitive meaning.  It frequently gets classed with words that have similar definitions, such as nerd or dork, and they have all been known to be used in a derogatory fashion.

However, over the last several years, the geeks of the world have been revealing themselves in great numbers, taking back the word for themselves and applying it in a positive light.  Read the rest of this entry ?

Guitar Hero….you bastard!

05 · 30 · 09

By @geekgirls

Guitar Hero, I never wanted you. I thought you were stupid, nay, ridiculous. I thought only losers, who didn’t possess the natural ability to play an actual musical instrument, would be your only friends. I thought that even if I could only muster notes through a kazoo, I would be better off without you. I thought that even if every video game for every system were to suddenly become discontinued for an uncertain amount of time and you were the last game that could be played, that I would still look the other way. Guitar Hero, I would have chosen any board game over you; Othello, Jacks, Pick up Stick. I would rather have been in a long deep sleep, induced by boredom than play with you. But, Guitar Hero, I was wrong…..terribly wrong. Read the rest of this entry ?

Book Review: I ♥ geeks

05 · 27 · 09

By @geekgirls

Although the title of this paperback book would suggest otherwise, after reading the introduction I realized I am NOT the target audience. This book, geared towards women who are dating or would like to date a geek guy, offers tips and instructions on how to better relate to a geek guy’s interests.

The book begins with a short questionnaire to determine what type of geek guy you are dating (i.e. video game geek, comic book/graphic novel geek, anime/manga geek, film/TV geek, sports geek, or sci-fi/fantasy geek). Although the author, Carrie Tucker, admits that the quiz is for “entertainment purposes only and full of sweeping generalizations,” those generalization become more frequent and less entertaining the further into the book I read.
