10 tips for an awesome SDCC experience

My geekguy and I went to our first San Diego Comic-Con in 2007 and we were so not prepared. I mean, I knew that the convention center was big and there would be a lot of people attending, but I didn’t understand the scale of “big” and “a lot” until I was actually standing there. Although we caught on pretty quickly, we missed a lot.

In order to ensure you have the best comic-con experience possible, here is a list of lessons learned from my first trip. This list is also intended for the true fangirl, not for the quazi-fangirl-eye-candy-who-datas-geeks-and-thinks-she-knows-spiderman-because-she-watched-the-movie-girl. So in the spirit of @geekgirldiva’s An Open Letter to the L.A. Times from a Geek Girl  and @loquaciousmuse’s The Real Girl’s Guide to SDCC, here are my top 10 tips for the comic-con girl:

If you geek girls aren’t familiar with Topless Robot (@ToplessRobot), I highly recommend it.  I check the website every day for geek news and a side of bitter hatred or childlike glee depending on the subject. Last week, Topless Robot posted an article about a homosexual relationship sprouting in a mainstream comic.  The result was an intelligent conversation about the gay characters in said comic.

Is a Tweep a Real Friend?

I often find myself defending using the word friend when referring to a twitter user. I converse with many of the same people online everyday and hadn’t realize that I replaced the word tweep with friend some time ago.

I began to question whether or not these twitterers could in fact be considered my friends or if I was taking this internet social platform too seriously. So, like any good geek girl, I decided to analyze the meaning of the word friend.

Have you seen this movie? You haven’t?
Well let me tell ya, you’re in for a treat.

You know the kind you get from the dentist after he drills into your teeth? The ones that are worth, like, a penny. The ones that you get bored with after two seconds and then want to smash under a car but they DON’T BREAK BECAUSE THEY ARE FAR TOO RESILIENT! That is what the experience of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was like. It’s all shiny and new but once you get into it…awful. Just awful. I’ve seen a lot of bad movies and bad television and bad everything, but I’ve always felt like I grew from the experience. The only thing growing from this experience is Michael Bay’s bank account and many a geeks fury. I want my three hours back.

Geek Girls Network: When did you first become interested in Web Site Design?

Selene Bowlby: I was first introduced to the internet back in high school, where all I had access to were text-based freenets and bulletin board services. It wasn’t long before I created my first (terribly designed) web site which was hosted in the Geocities Paris and Soho neighborhoods.

Although I majored in graphic design in college, at this point the internet was nothing more than a hobby for me. My career goal at that time was creating designs for print, such as advertisements, corporate identity, brochures, etc.

As I dabbled more in the emerging technology of the internet, my interest in the web grew tremendously. By the time I graduated, I was 100% positive that I wanted to focus on web site design and development.

GGN: What has been your favorite / most memorable project that you have worked on?
